“I’d rather have thirty minutes of wonderful

than a lifetime of nothing special.”

Make an appointment at Truvy’s Beauty Salon and get all the latest gossip from Shelby, M’Lynn, and the rest of the magnolias as they navigate life’s greatest joys and tragedies. Filled with hilarious repartee and not a few acerbic but humorously revealing verbal collisions, you will find a little piece of yourself in each of the characters. Filled with so much heart and warmth, Steel Magnolias touches on the gentle strength and courage that every woman carries within them as they support each other through the good times and bad. “It’s good to be reminded of what happens if you goof up here on earth.”

Miracle on South Division Street presents the Nowaks of Buffalo, NY. Clara and her three grown kids have always known they were special, ever since the miraculous Christmas Eve in 1942 when, according to legend, the Blessed Mother herself appeared to Grandpa in the family barbershop. Now Clara, the family matriarch, happily tends the family heirloom, a seventeen-foot memorial shrine to the Virgin Mary. As the play unfolds, daughter Ruth calls a family meeting to divulge her plan to finally go public with the miracle by creating a one-woman Christmas Show about the sacred event. But during the course of the meeting, the entire family’s faith is shaken to the very core when a deathbed confession causes the family legend to unravel. The results are heartfelt and hilarious!

THE ZOMBIE LIFE is performed as a self-help seminar for humans seeking conversion, conducted by a therapist who offers a unique remedy for life’s hardships. The therapist tells us,

“These are not the zombies you see on TV. Tonight’s seminar will educate you about the actual benefits of Zombie Life.”

The therapist’s assistants have completed the conversion process and provide testimonials on its efficacy. As the seminar unfolds the therapist’s assistants begin to verge off script, which is not unexpected when working with zombies.

The Zombie Life: A Seminar for Humans Seeking Conversion

We know life is hard. When you are ready to stop searching for meaning and leave the pain behind, we are ready to help.
1. Zombies have no responsibilities.
2. Zombies feel no guilt, shame, or emotional pain of any kind.
3. Zombies don’t plan for the future.
4. Zombies are never judgmental, petty, jealous, or hypocritical.
5. Zombies are free of racism, sexism, and all other forms of prejudice and bigotry.
6. Zombies form no governments, run no businesses, consume no natural resources, and cause no harm to their environments.
7. Zombies are never uncertain. They never second guess. They have no regrets.

Yet another terrific script from the authors of The Dixie Swim Club, The Hallelujah Girls, and Always a Bridesmaid, this delightful laugh-a-minute comedy tells the story of four unique women who are drawn together by fate – and an impromptu happy hour – and decide it’s high time to reclaim their enthusiasm for life. Rostand’s masterpiece tells the true but fictionalized story of the gifted poet, musician, soldier, and duelist who is kept from expressing his love for the beautiful Roxanne by the shame he feels about his rather large nose! Alternately funny, dramatic, witty, touching, and tragic, Ms. Frankel’s adaptation makes this wonderful story accessible to everyone.

Jacqueline Jones revives her portrayal of Jocelyn in

David Sedaris’s

THE SANTALAND DIARIES and SEASON’S GREETINGS

EXTENDED THROUGH December 22, 2017

Richmond Triangle Players

1300 Altamont Avenue, Richmond, Virginia 23230

Directed by T. Ross Aitken

Starring Robert Throckmorton and Jacqueline Jones

“Perfect is Director T. Ross Aitken’s choice of actors … Throckmorton and Jones are masterful in their use of inflection, timing and facial expressions. Each brings a sense of realness to the character that sometimes flirts with the darkest parts of our minds. Their portrayals are flawless, unlike their characters.”

The Santaland Diaries and Season’s Greetings

(Richmond Triangle Players, Richmond, VA)

Reviewed by Joan Tupponce

Richmond.com, November 19, 2004

“Impeccably performed by Jones, Jocelyn’s catty asides and increasingly unbelievable holiday cheer are comic gold … the lanky Throckmorton, able to communicate a boatload of attitude with just a glance, effortlessly throws off punch line after punch line. Mostly director T. Ross Aitken keeps things simple. He lets his two talented performers run, and armed with Sedaris’ finely crafted hilarity, they provide a whole holiday season’s share of merriment in a single night of theater.”

This production is dedicated to the Memory of Marcia Quick Gard.

For more information or to book a tour, please email lgard@smv.org

“There is one thing I know without question. The race of Man has created a fearsome and greedy beast called Progress, and it relishes every crushing stride with reckless abandon. I have seen what remains broken and lifeless in its wake, and I have tried to stop it. I have seen … And I have felt an outrage that carries my sense of reason almost to the limit.”

~ Gene Stratton-Porter from A SONG IN THE WILDERNESS, by Larry Gard

This compelling 45 minute one-woman show examines the life and experiences of this incredible woman who recognized the importance of conserving the earth’s environment. Viewers will depart the theatre with an understanding of just how strong the commitment must be to achieve both a reasonable and responsible balance between the preservation of natural resources and the industrial pursuits of mankind.

Gene Stratton-Porter (1863-1924) was a prolific author of both fiction and non-fiction, a naturalist, an environmentalist, musician, and a nature  photographer. She was the first American author to be translated into a foreign language. At the height of her writing career,  she was selling 5,000 books per day, and it is estimated that during her lifetime, she had 50 million readers around the world. She used her wealth  and position to finance her studies of nature, her accomplishments as a photographer of birds and moths, and her attempts to  save a 10,000 acre swamp in Indiana known as The Limberlost. Mrs. Stratton-Porter was also one of the first women to form a movie production studio.

A Song in the Wilderness, by Larry Gard (artistic director of the Carpenter Science Theatre at the Science Museum of Virginia) and directed by Jacqueline Jones, originated in Marcia Quick Gard’s passionate depiction of Gene Stratton Porter. A SONG IN THE WILDERNESS was first produced in 1993 as part of the annual Performances in the Humanities program of the Indiana Humanities Council, and starred Marcia Quick Gard as Gene Stratton-Porter. The show toured Indiana under the same banner during the spring of each year, through 1997. In 2002, A SONG IN THE WILDERNESS was produced featuring the same actress for a festival about women in science at the Science Museum of Virginia. We lost Marcia to cancer December 16, 2016. The 2017 production is offered by Larry Gard in loving memory of is wife Marcia Quick Gard, who passed away on December 16, 2016.

SOMETHING’S AFOOT ~ Ten people are stranded in an isolated English country house during a raging thunderstorm — the perfect scenario for an Agatha Christie whodunit, right?  MURPHY’S LAW

by Andy Nagraj and Jonathan Spivey

Direction and Music Direction by Andy Nagraj and Jonathan Spivey

Starring Jan Guarino, Audra Honaker, Jacqueline Jones,

Paul Major, Durron Tyre, and Scott Wichmann

Richmond Triangle Players;  1300 Altamont Avenue, RVA 23230

Reservations are not necessary; Pay-what-you-can; Suggested donation $10.00

From Andy and Jonathan:

When everything that can go wrong does go wrong for everyman Dave Spring, the solution appears obvious: a cross-country road trip. Miles whiz by, colorful characters collide, and hilarity ensues as Dave contemplates what to do when life hands him a fork in the road.   Featuring a toe-tapping score that spans folk, funk, and everything in between, this road-trip musical comedy will split your sides and leave you humming your way out of the theatre.  This one-night-only concert reading of the road-trip musical comedy Murphy’s Law is Richmond’s first – but not final – taste of the musical since the original workshop at the Modlin Center in 2004.

From Swift Creek Mill Theatre:

“The Hallelujah Girls is another great show by the writers who gave us “The Golden Girls” and last season’s runaway hit, The Dixie Swim Club. In The Hallelujah Girls, an enterprising Southern woman has leased a dilapidated church and turned it into weekly pampering for her four best friends and a special treat for the ladies of Eden Falls, Georgia: the SPA-DEE-DAH! But look out! There are secrets in the basement and romantic entanglements above! If you loved the ladies of the Swim Club, we think you’ll love the ladies of the Spa-Dee-Dah, too. THE HALLELUJAH GIRLS is a side-splitting joyful comedy. You’ll laugh out loud and shout, ‘Hallelujah!’

MRS. BOB CRATCHIT’S WILD CHRISTMAS BINGE

Produced by 5th Wall Theatreon the stage at The Speakeasy

528 N 2nd St Richmond, VA 23219
Book & lyrics by Christopher Durang, music by Michael Friedman
Directed by Billy Christopher Maupin
Tues Dec. 9, 8:00 pm

¿A rollicking parody!¿
– Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

¿A hilarious success! The show goes in so many wonderfully loony directions at once.¿
– Pittsburgh Pulp

¿Fiendishly funny…never disappoints. Wild it most certainly is, without apologies.¿
– Observer-Reporter

¿The show is hilarious, and the audience was crazy!
Seriously, as opposed to laughing, they just screamed at the stage.¿
– The Young People¿s Guide to Theatre and the Galaxy

After standing-room-only success in its initial staging and past two revivals, Carol Piersol’s and Billy Christopher Maupin’s telling of Mrs. Bob Cratchit¿s Wild Christmas Binge will come to life again, this time under the auspices of 5th Wall Theatre.Playwright Christopher Durang reveals Mrs. Cratchit¿s transformation in this bawdy staged reading with music and song.

In this departure from Dickens, young Scrooge¿s exclamations of ¿Bah, humbug!¿ are an undiagnosed ¿kind of seasonal Tourette¿s Syndrome,¿ and the Ghost of Christmas Past is played by a sassy African-American woman with enough attitude to portray all three spirits (which she does). She tries to show Scrooge his past, present and future in order to change him, but her magic keeps malfunctioning in Durang¿s version of the beloved holiday classic, and they consistently find themselves transported to the wrong time and place. Mrs. Bob Cratchit, a minor character in the Dickens, takes center stage here. No longer loving and long suffering, Mrs. Bob is in a rage! As the Ghost loses more control, the plot morphs into parodies of Oliver Twist, ¿The Gift of the Magi¿, and It¿s a Wonderful Life. In this rollicking parody, Scrooge¿s tale of redemption and gentle grace is placed squarely on its head!

Tickets only $10! ($5 Students/Subscribers/Theatre Professionals)
Tickets available at

From the writers who gave us “The Golden Girls,” The Dixie Swim Club is an hilarious and touching comedy about friendships that last forever. Five southern women, who met on their college swim team, set aside a long weekend every August to catch up. The Dixie Swim Club focuses on four of those weekends and spans a period of thirty-three years.  When fate throws a wrench into one of their lives, these friends rally around with strength and love that takes this comedy in a poignant and surprising direction.

How does one continue to love in the wake of tragedy? Why do some couples cling to each other, while others find themselves growing apart in their grief? This is but one of the many questions explored in Jane Anderson’s compelling, remarkable play.

The opening finds Dinah and Bill — a born-again Christian couple dealing with the loss of their only child — making a weekend trip from their Ohio home to California, where Dinah’s cousin, Jeannette, and her ailing husband, Neil, are living on the site of their fire-stricken home and, yes, sleeping in a yurt. As the conservative, Christian Ohioans meet their West Coast, left leaning foils, much wine (and a bit of pot) is consumed; meanwhile, divergent values and sensibilities clash.

In a love story and comedic drama that plumbs societal, religious and ethical divides, the couples explore their respective life perspectives with finesse, humor, honesty and respect. THE QUALITY OF LIFE is HATTheatre’s entry into The Acts of Faith Festival for 2014.

This award-winning musical begins when a die-hard musical-theater fan plays his favorite cast album on his turntable, and the musical literally bursts to life in his living room. It tells the rambunctious tale of a brazen Broadway starlet trying to find, and keep, her true love. Loaded with lively tunes and outrageous characters, this modern crowd-pleaser, with a cast of 18 with a live 8-piece orchestra, is the perfect way to usher in the renovations at the historic Swift Creek Mill Theatre. http://www.swiftcreekmill.com/drowsy-chaperone/

A heart-warming comedy! “Laughter through tears is my favorite emotion,” says Truvy, the sassy hairdresser and owner of her own salon in Chinquapin Parish, the setting for one of America’s favorite comedies. This salon is where six wonderful (and often wacky) Southern women come not only to get their hair done, but also to share stories, recipes, triumphs, and loss. Joining Truvy are Annelle (the wayward young woman who may or may not be married), Clairee (the former mayor’s wife), Ouiser (who claims she is not crazy; she’s just been in a very bad mood for forty years), M’Lynn (the stalwart center of the group), and Shelby (M’Lynn’s daughter, preparing for her wedding day). A delightful and heart-touching comedy about the bonds that hold us together, Steel Magnolias will have you, too, laughing through tears.

Finalist for the 2012 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, Sons of the Prophet, by Stephen Karam (Speech & Debate), is a refreshingly honest take on how we cope with wounds that just won’t heal. If to live is to suffer, then Joseph Douaihy is more alive than most. With unexplained chronic pain and the fate of his reeling family on his shoulders, Joseph’s health, sanity, and insurance premium are on the line. In an age when modern medicine has a cure for just about everything, Sons of the Prophet is the funniest play about human suffering you’re likely to see.

“The first important new play of the fall season.”

~ The New York Times

“‘Ravishing’ is the best word for Stephens Karam’s new comedy…

At once deep, deft, and beautifully made.”

~ The New Yorker

“This is feel-good theater you don’t have to feel bad about later,

mainstream stage entertainment with no aspartame aftertaste.”

~ New York magazine

The Shop (across the street from Plant Zero Art Center:
On East 4th Street at Hull Street, Richmond, 23224)**

Directed by Heather Falks

Starring Jacqueline Jones as Miss Palmer

featuring

Kevin Grantz as ….. George Washington
Charlie Sparks as ………. Gatmasta Phat
Sarah Provencal as …….. Mrs. Randolph
Stephen Ryan as … Congressman Norge
Raven Wilkes as ……………………. Angel

Zachary Campion as……………The Voice

and narrated by Stacey Cabaj

In Miss Palmer’s School of Penmanship and Civil Behavior, Priscilla Palmer passionately believes that the decline of civility in America is linked to the decline of our national handwriting. She addresses a class of “civility offenders” whom she believes can be socially rehabilitated by learning proper penmanship. A gangsta-wanna-be, an overly permissive soccer mom, an ill-mannered Congressman and George Washington all challenge her for the elimination of cursive instruction. Wickedly funny and often irreverent, it is also a smart and honest look at civility in our society today.

** DIRECTIONS: The Entrance of The Shop is on the West side of its building. Google Maps actually shows Plant Zero. Stand in front of Plant Zero, look across the street and you’ll see rear of The Shop. Cross the street, enter the chain-link gate (it leads to a parking lot) and proceed around to your left to access the front door. There is also a sidewalk on Decator Street that leads to the entrance of The Shop. Park on the street or in the lot. http://goo.gl/maps/Axl4

In honor of the 100th anniversary of the birth of famed American playwright
Tennessee Williams, The Firehouse Theatre Project is proud to open its
2011-12 season with Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.

In Tennessee Williams’ stunning masterpiece and Pulitzer Prize winner, a powerful Southern family gathers to celebrate the sixty-fifth birthday of patriarch Big Daddy. The mood is somber, despite the festivities, as the fact that Big Daddy is dying of cancer becomes general knowledge. In a scramble to secure their part of his estate, family members hide the truth about his diagnosis from him and Big Mama. In the center of this rich and timeless portrait of a dysfunctional family, stands Maggie’s passionate and unrelenting fight for the love of her alcoholic husband Brick, who has been on a downward spiral since the suicide of his friend Skipper. His indifference and bitterness gives his weaselly brother Gooper every opportunity to outbid him in the on-going fight for the family fortune, much to Maggie’s dismay, as she has known and feared poverty since childhood. The ensuing stormy confrontations bring to light raw emotions and unexpected demons which threaten to rip apart the family forever.

Two eight-year-olds’ lives collide in the nurse’s office: Doug rode his bike off the roof and Kayleen can’t stop throwing up. As they mature from accident-prone kids to self-destructive adults, their broken hearts and broken bones draw them ever closer.  These two rebels may only be fit for one another.  But how far can one person go to heal another’s wounds?

Excerpt from “An Interview with Rajiv Joseph” by By Mark Bly

Rajiv, what inspired you to write Gruesome Playground Injuries?

Rajiv: I was in a bar with a friend of mine who was retelling me the variety of calamitous accidents that had befallen him over the course of his life, from the time he was very little until the time he was an adult and each of the accidents were equally bizarre. In the course of telling the story to me, he was, in a strange way, charting his own life. I thought, as he was telling me all these crazy stories, how the accidents and the scars that cover one’s body can be a map of one’s existence. That led me to a different line of thinking: What if those same scars and markings not only charted your existence but charted your relationship with someone else? My friend got up to go to the restroom and I took out a piece of paper and wrote down the title of the play. I thought, I don’t know what this play is, but I do know I have an interesting title for it and I do know the idea behind that title. So that’s where it initially came from, and after that it slowly evolved into the story we have now which is this relationship between Kayleen and Doug.

A Staged Reading of this irreverent play
by Obie-award winning Christopher Durang

MRS. BOB CRATCHIT’S WILD CHRISTMAS BINGE

Produced by The Firehouse Theatre and Barksdale Theatre
Book & lyrics by Christopher Durang, music by Michael Friedman
Directed by Billy Christopher Maupin
Dec. 19 & 20, 7:30 p.m.

“A rollicking parody!”
– Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

“A hilarious success! The show goes in so many wonderfully loony directions at once.”
– Pittsburgh Pulp

“Fiendishly funny…never disappoints. Wild it most certainly is, without apologies.”
– Observer-Reporter

“The show is hilarious, and the audience was crazy!
Seriously, as opposed to laughing, they just screamed at the stage.”
– The Young People’s Guide to Theatre and the Galaxy

After standing-room-only success the past two years, Firehouse Artistic Director Carol Piersol invited Director Billy Christopher Maupin to revive Mrs. Bob Cratchit’s Wild Christmas Binge at the Firehouse Theatre. Playwright Christopher Durang reveals Mrs. Cratchit’s transformation in this bawdy staged reading with music and song.

In this departure from Dickens, young Scrooge’s exclamations of “Bah, humbug!” are an undiagnosed “kind of seasonal Tourette’s Syndrome,” and the Ghost of Christmas Past is played by a sassy African-American woman with enough attitude to portray all three spirits (which she does). She tries to show Scrooge his past, present and future in order to change him, but her magic keeps malfunctioning in Durang’s version of the beloved holiday classic, and they consistently find themselves transported to the wrong time and place. Mrs. Bob Cratchit, a minor character in the Dickens, takes center stage here. No longer loving and long suffering, Mrs. Bob is in a rage! As the Ghost loses more control, the plot morphs into parodies of Oliver Twist, “The Gift of the Magi”, and It’s a Wonderful Life. In this rollicking parody, Scrooge’s tale of redemption and gentle grace is placed squarely on its head!

The Tragedy of Macbeth
A Gender-Reversed Exploration

Directed by Billy Christopher Maupin

October 5, 2010, 7:30 PM Gottwald Playhouse

Richmond Shakespeare production at Richmond Centerstage

The premiere of Richmond Shakespeare’s second season of Second Tuesdays Staged Readings,

“We’re shaking it up and putting it on the FIRST Tuesday!”

What if Macbeth’s struggle with masculinity were viewed through the eyes of a woman? What resonance might one find if a man were to plead “Unsex me here! And fill me from the crown to the toe topful of direst cruelty”? Or if a female Malcolm says “Dispute it like a man” and a striking young blond woman…  turns to him and says “I shall do so; but I must also feel it as a man.” Come find out on October 5, when Melissa Johnston Price steps into this iconic role that is so “steeped in blood,” as she is joined by Brandon Mears (graduate of the Shakespeare Theatre Academy for Classical Acting) as Lady Macbeth, and Molly Hood as Macduff, as well as Kyle Billeter, Jennifer Hammond, Jacqueline Jones, Shirley Kagan, Sarah Legere, Jennifer Martin, Laurel Maughan, Carolyn Meade, Rebecca Anne Muhleman, Meg Price, Jamie Rees, Maggie Roop, Andrea Ross, Russell Rowland, Alan Sader, Jody Strickler, Robert Throckmorton, Ellie Wilson, Annie Zanetti and more! You won’t want to miss this gender-reversed staged reading of one of Shakespeare’s greatest tragedies.

True West unfolds the reunion of two brothers in their absent mother’s California home. Austin is an Ivy League-educated script writer who is trying to sell a movie script to a Hollywood producer. Quite unexpectedly, his older brother Lee shows up after several years of drifting and grifting his way back and forth across the desert.  As each brother takes measure of the other’s life, jealousy becomes rivalry and the two men lock in a bitter confrontation imagined by one of America’s most acclaimed dramatists.

Arthur Miller’s exceptional play of secrets and lies is the story of the Keller and Deever families. During the war, Joe Keller and Herbert Deever ran a machine shop which made airplane parts. When the firm turned out defective parts which caused the deaths of many men, Deever was sent to prison. Keller, however, went free and made a lot of money. The shadows of this catastrophe, Keller’s pilot son who is MIA during the war, the love affair between Chris Keller and Ann Deever, and the bitterness of Ann’s brother George, dominate this powerful play.

Four “musicians” (1st Violin, 2nd Violin, Cello, and Viola) each begin relating their dreams simultaneously in darkness. The lights come up as these stories unfold contrapuntally, sometimes intersecting, sometimes veering off into seemingly independent directions, sometimes all clashing together, but ultimately culminating in all four weaving together to finish in a “brief, everlasting moment…[of] perfect[ion]” as in a beautiful symphony.

Jacqueline Jones in the Gender-bending role of Don John

Much Ado About Nothing

March 6 – 29, 2008

Young lovers Hero and Claudio are to be married in one week. To pass the time, they conspire with Don Pedro to set a “lover’s trap” for Benedick, an arrogant confirmed bachelor, and Beatrice, his favorite sparring partner. Meanwhile, the evil Don Jon conspires to break up the wedding by accusing Hero of infidelity. In the end, it all turns out to be “much ado about nothing.” The play boasts one of Shakespeare’s most delightful heroines, most dancing wordplay, and the endearing spectacle of intellectual and social self-importance bested by the desire to love and be loved in return. It offers both the dancing wit of the “merry war” between the sexes, and a sobering vision of the costs of that combat for both men and women. Shakespeare dramatizes a social world in all of its vibrant particulars, in which characters are shaped by the relations between social convention and individual choice.

Who would have guessed that Rumpelstiltskin would marry the Miller¿s Daughter? Or, that they would have a daughter who could spin magic of her own? With courage, wit, and some ingenious tricks, Rumpelstiltskin’s Daughter changes a greedy king and saves an entire kingdom.      A first-ever Richmond stage production of an endearing holiday film favorite! This classic tale is true to the original film which for many years has amused and warmed so many hearts. Set in the 1940s, it is the story of a middle-class Indiana family at Christmas time. Young Ralphie is on a quest for the Holy Grail of Christmas presents: “a genuine Red Ryder 220-Shot Carbine Action Air Rifle.” You’ll recognize all the beloved scenes such as Ralphie in atrocious pink bunny pajamas and a classmate’s tongue frozen to the school flag pole. A Christmas Story is the comic relief you’ll need during a hectic holiday season!

DEATHTRAP

Barksdale Theatre at Hanover Tavern

September 14 – October 21

Sidney Bruhl is a middle-aged playwright famous for his oh-so-clever whodunits, but he hasn’t had a hit in twenty years. When one of his former students sends him the only draft of a new murder mystery, Sidney devises a plan to ensure his own fortune. Will Sidney’s scheme lead him back to Broadway? Will the student be the victim of malicious jealousy? Will Sidney’s wife be able to withstand the horror in her household? Will the eccentric psychic who is visiting Sidney’s neighbors unearth the nastiness next door? Only one answer is certain: missing this classic Broadway thriller would be a deadly mistake.

Jacqueline Jones Sings in

Into the Woods Gives Back

August 4 Midnight and August 7, 8:00 PM

Please join me on Tuesday, August 7 at 8:00 PM at the family-friendly “Into the Woods Gives Back” Cabaret at Barksdale: Willow Lawn.  Tickets are available at the door or in advance at 282-2620.

All the performers are donating our time and talents to benefit the Richmond Theatre Artists Fund, a program of the Richmond Alliance for Professional Theatres (RAPT) and the Community Foundation. The Richmond Theatre Artists Fund helps with the emergency needs of metro Richmond theatre artists who are confronted by insurmountable financial challenges due to major illness or some other tragedy beyond their control.

Prior to the establishment of the endowed fund, the theatre community raised emergency funds on a case by case basis. For example, we have raised tens of thousands of dollars to:

~ provide new housing for an actor with AIDS who lost his job and was thrown out onto the street when his condition was disclosed,

~ make mortgage payments for a lifelong theatre administrator who was about to lose her home as her husband (a theatre tech director) struggled for more than a year with brain cancer,

~ help a director who had emergency quadruple bypass heart surgery meet his medical expenses and mortgage payments, and

~ pay for critical medications for a cherished actress fighting against terminal cancer.

Bruce Miller, Barksdale/Theatre IV Artistic Director, was in Saturday’s Midnight audience and summarized the evening’s events in the “Barksdale Buzz.”

Into the Woods

June 15 – August 12

Are you certain what you wish is what you want? Sondheim’s brilliant music—together with bakers, witches, and vain handsome princes straight out of the Brothers Grimm—vividly illustrates the potential for treachery in our innermost wishes. An ambivalent Cinderella? A bloodthirsty Little Red Riding Hood? A Prince Charming with a roving eye? A Witch…who raps? They’re all among the cockeyed characters in James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim’s fractured fairy tale. When a Baker and his Wife learn they’ve been cursed with childlessness by the Witch next door, they embark on a quest for the special objects required to break the spell, swindling, lying to and stealing from Cinderella, Little Red, Rapunzel and Jack. Everyone’s wish is granted at the end of Act One, but the consequences of their actions return to haunt them. What begins as a lively irreverent fantasy in the style of The Princess Bride becomes a moving lesson about community responsibility and the stories we tell our children. Into the Woods is a rare and moving musical theatre classic.

Jacqueline Jones as “Mrs. Boyle” in Agatha Christie’s

The Mousetrap

What:

Jacqueline Jones as “Mrs. Boyle” in The Mousetrap

One hit leads to another, and no hit can top this classy thriller from Agatha Christie, the grand dame of suspense. Now in its 54th incredible year on London¿s West End, The Mousetrap is the world¿s longest running play, and it continues to enthrall, entertain and thrill audiences from every corner of the globe. In her own inimitable style, Dame Christie has created a gallery of fascinating characters, an atmosphere of shuddering suspense, and a brilliantly intricate plot where murder lurks around every corner, and no one guesses whodunnit until the final curtain falls. A group of strangers stranded at a country inn must contend with a murderer in their midst. As a snow storm rages outside and the phone lines go down, past lives and secrets are bared, and everyone struggles to protect themselves and identify the guilty party before it¿s too late. An invigorating thrill ride from start to finish, The Mousetrap is a must-see classic for anyone interested in world-class entertainment.
